What Happens After A Job Loss

Losing a job can feel like the most devastating event in your life. There are a myriad of emotions when they tell you “we don’t need you anymore”. When this happens, it hurts. You are being told either they want to do things another way or you’re just not good enough for what we want. Don’t be embarrassed about it, it happens all the time, but why do we feel this way?

Circumstances in life are neutral. It is only the thoughts we have about it, that determine how we feel.

When I first heard this, I had the same thoughts as some of you may. My mind started to look for all of the examples and exceptions where this wouldn't be true because there are certainly situations and circumstances in life that many of us can agree are negative, unfair, undesirable, or unjust.

For now, let this meet you where you are at and try to understand this in your life with your job. Let's take the circumstance of losing a job. If it is a neutral circumstance, then why does it feel bad?

Let's take a look at some thoughts often created about the circumstance of losing a job...

- I worked so hard and it didn't even matter.

- They didn't appreciate me.

- Now I have to start all over.

- I'm too old to change careers.

- I'll never find another job.

- What's the point in even trying?

Can you see how these thoughts lead you to feel discouraged, disappointed, sad, rejected, depressed, and unmotivated? These thoughts will invade your mind and thought processes and lead to a life unfulfilled.

Now let's take a look at some thoughts in the same situation that would lead to different feelings...

- I'm open to new opportunities.

- I'm looking forward to a new beginning.

- I am excited to find a job where I am valued and appreciated.

- I am experienced and qualified for so many careers.

- I am resourceful.

- The time is right to go after the dream job I have been putting off.

Do you see how those thoughts can lead to feelings of motivation, determination, curiosity, value, and even enthusiasm?

Once you apply this new thought process into your own life, you will be able to control how you feel about any circumstance. This will drive the actions that will lead to the results and outcomes you are looking to achieve.

It’s all in how you look at the situation. Without optimism, you don’t have anything more to look forward to, and you will feel both trapped and defeated.

You are good at what you do, and you deserve to be appreciated for it.
