The Push to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

I’ve had Henry Ford on my mind for the past couple of days. There are a lot of stories and phrases associated with him, some I have talked about earlier.

There is a story about when he was hiring people to work on his idea of the assembly line. He would always have the interview during a meal. Right after the meal was brought to the table was when he knew whether he was going to hire or decline the candidate.

What he was looking for was an open mind, one that was open to new thoughts and ideas. He was doing something totally different than any other manufacturer was doing, and that needed an agile mind.

When he was going through all the applications and resumes, he saw a lot of good people, people who had all the right qualifications. But there are 2 sides to a candidate. The one on paper and who the person actually is. He wanted to see who the person actually was.

So when the meal was brought to the table, he was looking for one thing: did the person season their food first, or did they try it before seasoning? This told Henry what the mindset of the person was. Did the person do the same thing every time, or was the candidate open to try new things?

Admiral Hyman Rickover, the father of the nuclear Navy, also had unorthodox ways of interviewing people for his nuclear program. He would have them sit in uneven and uncomfortable chairs, ask off the wall questions, and be completely unpredictable in the interview. This was to bring out the “real” person.

This brings me to a component of my coaching: The Comfort Zone. Both Henry Ford and Hyman Rickover were getting the interviewees out of their comfort zone and seeing what they can accomplish. If you aren’t open to doing things differently or doing different things, then you are not learning. You are not achieving. You are not actively working towards your goals. You do the same thing every time, in the same way, every day. And you get nowhere in your goals. This is not the way to live your life! This is not the way to attain goals! Quit sitting around and waiting for things to fall into your lap!

QUIT THAT!!

Get out there and make a difference in YOUR life!

It’s time for you to take control of your life, make it happen!!
